HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR MATERNITY SESSION
Pregnancy is such a beautiful and fleeting season — and maternity photos are a way to pause time and capture the magic before your little one arrives. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, preparing for your maternity session can make all the difference in how relaxed and confident you feel in front of the camera.
Here’s everything you need to know to prep for your maternity photoshoot:
What To Wear
Styling can completely elevate the look and feel of your session. Here are some tips:
- Go for fitted or flowy: Dresses that hug the bump or flow gently around it are both great options.
- Stick to solid colors and soft patterns: Neutral tones like creams, sage, or muted earth tones photograph beautifully, especially outdoors.
- Avoid busy prints and logos that can be distracting.
- Let your photographer help you. We know what photographs well and can offer ideas that you wouldn't normally think of.
If your partner or family is joining, coordinate outfits with a cohesive color palette without being too matchy.
Self-Care
Consider getting your hair and makeup done professionally. Not only does it enhance your natural glow, but it can also be a fun way to treat yourself and feel confident on shoot day. Ask your photographer for recommendations! If you’re doing it yourself, keep things natural and camera-ready — soft curls, neutral tones, and subtle definition go a long way. Remember to bring your lip color and powder with you for touch-ups during the session.
If you're going to self tan prior to the session use a professional. This will avoid streaky or orange tans.
For nails keep them clean and either a soft pink or neutral, make sure your partners nails are clean too!
Prep The Family
If your partner or kids are joining the session:
- Let little ones know what to expect — make it sound like fun! You can say things like "we're going on an adventure, I wonder what we'll find!"
- Bring a colorless snack for the little ones, things like cheerios or puffs.
- Use bribery like a small treat or ice cream after the session! But save it for after, no messes during the session
Rest, Hydrate, and Relax
It sounds simple, but getting a good night’s sleep and staying hydrated will help you feel your best. Try not to overthink the session — your photographer will guide you with poses and prompts so you can just focus on connecting with your baby and your family.
Bring water and a snack with you to hydrate and fuel your body during the session.
If you're not feeling well the day of your session, don't push yourself and let your photographer know. You and your baby's health is what is most important!

Maternity sessions are about celebrating your journey into motherhood — the beauty, the strength, the love. By preparing ahead and trusting your photographer, you’ll walk away with beautiful images you’ll cherish forever.
